Survey of Technical College Graduates Released

The Carl Vinson Institute of Government has released the results of a survey of the 1992-93 class of graduates from Georgia’s technical colleges. The study was intended to find out how satisfied these graduates were with their technical education, and to discover how effectively their education prepared them for careers.

Sharon Rigsby, president of Gwinnett Technical College, said, “The results of this survey signify that the programs Gwinnett Technical College provides are helping our students, our graduates succeed in their goals and their careers – and that’s by far the best measure of success for the college.”

“The findings of the survey were extremely gratifying and encouraging,” said Michael Vollmer, commissioner of the Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE), which oversees the state’s technical college system. “We discovered that nearly all the respondents (96%) were so satisfied with the training they received that they would recommend attending technical college to others.”

The survey, titled “10-Year Graduate Study: Class of 1992-93,” also tracked the career paths of the technical college graduates and the relation between their technical education. Among the facts discovered was that 80% of the businesses started by the graduates were still in operation at the time of the survey.

“Our system has recognized the significance of entrepreneurs and has reinvigorated our efforts to support this important source of private investment and employment. It’s good to know that our graduates who started businesses have been able to succeed at this rate.” Vollmer said, noting that results will be used for strategic planning and program improvement.

James G. Ledbetter, director of the Vinson Institute, hailed the survey results as a great sign for Georgia’s economic development. “The survey reflects the continuing success of Georgia’s technical colleges in serving people and businesses throughout the state.”
