Trip Abroad for Gwinnett Tech Students Adds Life & Learning Lessons
Two-Week Trip Gives Insights into International Business
When a group from Gwinnett Technical College embarked on a 14-day trip to the fashion-forward regions of Italy, Venice and Switzerland, Christine Jaksha has to admit she didn’t necessarily go for an education on style trends.
“It was more for a life-learning experience,” said Jaksha, the 25-year-old fashion-marketing student from Gwinnett Tech.
“We learned a lot about different cultures and the way people there lived,” said Jaksha. “It was so different from here. Besides language, the way they’re more relaxed and slowed down – they’re not so rush, rush, rushed. They seem to enjoy time and things around them more. It was just an education about life.” A sharp contrast to the lesson she learned in one job back home, where a manager told her “if you have time to lean, you have time to clean.”
While there were a lot of life lessons, there was a great deal of educational experience as well – from business visits, to city tours to lectures.
The group met with the team that markets Frankfurt to tourists, got an overview on the Euro from Deutsche Bundesbank, took a behind-the-scenes look at fashion magazine Burda Moden and got an inside-look at a leading fashion chain retailer for young women.
GTC offers the trip abroad as part of its international marketing program each year. This year the group traveled to Heidelberg, Offenburg, Strasbourg, Lucerne, Engelberg, Lake Como, Milan, Verona and Venice.
“The students get the opportunity to see how businesses operate in other countries – their problems, their successes,” said LaVerne Tilley, marketing management program director at Gwinnett Tech. “There are so many things that are universal in running a business – it gives a good lesson in international business operations.”
