Gwinnett Tech Recognizes Top Students at Annual Awards Ceremony
Gwinnett Technical College (GTC) honored over 100 students for academic excellence and achievement this year at the college’s annual May Awards Ceremony held at The Busbee Center on the GTC campus.
The Gwinnett Tech Foundation awarded 40 scholarships totaling $51,400 at the ceremony, recognizing students for various achievements in merit, scholarship, vocational and occupational skills, and overall leadership and teamwork.
The culmination of the Awards Ceremony program was the naming of Gwinnett Tech’s 2006 Distinguished Student. “This award is presented to the one outstanding student that best represents the ideals of the college,” said Dave McCulloch, vice president for recruitment and interim vice president for academic affairs for Gwinnett Tech.
Honored for her educational goals, community involvement and values, Ginger Boyll was named the 2006 Distinguished Award recipient and received an award and check in the amount of $500. Boyll, enrolled in the Networking Specialist program at Gwinnett Tech – with a 3.79 GPA – will now enter the Information Security Program at GTC upon graduation. Boyll was selected as this year’s recipient after a thorough screening and interviewing process. In addition to academic success, Boyll is also an involved school volunteer, serving as a student ambassador, president of the Student Leadership Council and an officer for the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). She also recently won a scholarship from the Women in Electronics organization.
Boyll also serves the community by volunteering with Hurricane Katrina victims, high school students, troops in Iraq, Relay for Life and The United Way.
Anthony Rojo, program director, networking computer and industrial technology at GTC, and the instructor that nominated Boyll, said that Boyll was well-deserving of the award because she ‘far exceeds expectations in her program and sets the standards for her peers. She is a constant asset to the school, both as a role model student and valuable resource to new program students.”
Boyll was selected from the top five outstanding students according to a panel of judges’ selection. The other outstanding students, also recognized at the awards ceremony, included:
- Donna Covault – Business Management
- Joseph Rounsenville – Commercial Construction
- Shelley Hoster – Early Childcare
- Joel Rosich – Internet Web Design
“We have so many students that go above and beyond – and the annual Awards Ceremony gives us a chance to applaud their accomplishments and wish them continued success,” says Sharon J. Rigsby, president, Gwinnett Technical College.
The awards program is held annually to celebrate the achievements of Gwinnett Tech students with presentations of a variety of awards and scholarships. A list of existing Gwinnett Tech Foundation scholarships is available at www.GwinnettTech.edu.
