Motivating Instructors Make the Grade with Students
Gwinnett Tech Grad Credits Instructor for Success in Fashion Marketing Field
On the brink of a new school session, students begin to consider the teachers they may have during the upcoming year and remember the ones that have made an impact in their lives.
For Raquel Smith, one stellar teacher meant the difference between a stand-out and a stall-out career.
With credit to an impactful teacher and advisor, Smith is fulfilling a dream come true, working in the fashion capitol of the world for a leading designer, and serving as stylist to A-list celebrities and movie stars on location during shoots for movies, commercials and videos.
At 24, Smith knew she wanted a career in fashion, but wasn"t sure how to make that happen. After touring Gwinnett Technical College and speaking to an advisor, the college"s fashion and marketing program seemed like a good fit with her goals.
But Smith cites the encouragement she received from her instructors as one of her main means to her current success. In particular, Smith credits LaVerne Tilley, program director for the marketing management program at Gwinnett Tech, as the inspiration behind Smith"s aspirations.
"[Instructor Tilley] just knows how to push you, especially when you"re a good student and want to achieve success in your field," Smith said. "She was so supportive, and gave me the energy and encouragement to believe in myself. What I learned from her, I put to use every day in my job. But not only did I go into my job knowing what I needed for my career; I also had a clear understanding of what the job would have in store for me." Having been in New York for several years now, Smith says she was prepared for the career she entered. "I knew it would be a lot of work, but I love what I do."
