Gwinnett Tech Employees, Students Offer Time, Talent & Money for Community
GTC Participation in Gwinnett Great Days of Service, State Charitable Campaign Expected to Surpass Previous Efforts
This month, Gwinnett Tech employees and students will be using their resources – both the financial and the sweat-equity kind – to make a difference in their community.
As part of the Gwinnett Great Days of Service, more than 250 employees and students from Gwinnett Tech will be sharing their time and talents on Friday, October 20, volunteering in community projects with nonprofit agencies and schools.
The Gwinnett Great Days of Service is a community-wide program that provides support to local nonprofit agencies that struggle with growing needs and limited resources. Through this program, private businesses, churches, civic groups, schools, individuals and/or families volunteer with local nonprofit agencies, bringing valuable skills and resources that these nonprofits would otherwise not be able to afford. In return, volunteers are given the opportunity to use the experience for team building and leadership development as well as a way to give back to the community.
Last year, Gwinnett Tech received the “Agency of the Year” award for its participation in the 2005 Great Days of Service, in which more than 120 members of the Gwinnett Tech team contributed to various service projects. The ‘Agency of the Year’ award is the top company award for the Gwinnett Great Days of Service.
In conjunction with the state’s charitable contributions campaign, run by the Georgia Merit System, Gwinnett Tech employees and students will also be raising and donating funds that will be used to help thousands of Georgians in every part of the state, as well as individuals in other countries.
Last year, Gwinnett Tech students and employees donated nearly $25,000 through the state’s charitable contributions campaign, which benefited hundreds of nonprofit organizations and programs providing valuable health, human and environmental services in the community.
The goals for this year’s volunteering and fundraising efforts are set even higher. With more than 250 employees already committed to serve in the Great Day of Service, Gwinnett Tech anticipates a record turnout for good works, as well as an elevated participation level in the state’s charitable contributions campaign.
“We have had such a solid history of physical and financial support from the staff and employees at the college, that we are confident we can top our past goals, and continue to make a tremendous impact in our community through the Great Days of Service program and the state’s charitable campaign initiative,” said Mary Beth Byerly, executive director for institutional advancement at Gwinnett Tech.
This year, Great Day of Service volunteers will participate in more than a dozen similar community projects with partners like:
- Families First
- Kanoheda Elementary School
- Lawrenceville Elementary School
- Life Link of Georgia
- Louise Radloff Elementary School
- McKendree Elementary School
- Salvation Army
- YMCA – JM Tull
Some of the specific duties volunteers will be performing during the Great Day of Service include landscaping, painting, working and reading with children, delivering care packages, increasing awareness about organ donation, providing maintenance for parks and classrooms and light carpentry.
