Gwinnett Tech Recognizes Top Students at Annual Awards Ceremony
Gwinnett Technical College honored more than 150 students for academic excellence and achievement at the college's annual Awards Ceremony held at The Busbee Center on Gwinnett Tech's campus last week.
The Gwinnett Tech Foundation awarded 39 scholarships totaling $30,850 at the ceremony, recognizing students for various achievements in merit, scholarship, vocational and occupational skills, and overall leadership and teamwork.
The culmination of the Awards Ceremony program was the naming of Gwinnett Tech's 2007 Distinguished Student.
Honored for her educational goals, community involvement and values, Grace Butler was recognized as the 2007 Distinguished Student Award recipient and received an award and a check in the amount of $500.
Butler is enrolled in the respiratory care program at Gwinnett Tech and is currently fulfilling a lifelong dream of serving in the healthcare field. Butler was selected as this year's recipient after a thorough screening and interviewing process. In addition to academic success, Butler is also an involved school volunteer, collecting items to be sent to a clinic in Gambia, running a booth at the health and wellness fair, and assisting with the Global Perspective Bash.
Bob DeLorme, program director, respiratory care technology at GTC, and the instructor that nominated Butler, said that Butler was well-deserving of the award because she has the "innate ability to immediately put everyone at ease and place others first. She is truly giving and touches the heart of everyone she meets."
Butler was selected from the top five outstanding students by a panel of judges.
"The Awards Ceremony is such a great celebration of the achievements of so many students who go above and beyond each year," says Sharon J. Rigsby, president, Gwinnett Technical College.
The awards program is held annually to celebrate the achievements of Gwinnett Tech students with presentations of a variety of awards and scholarships. A list of existing Gwinnett Tech Foundation scholarships is available at www.GwinnettTech.edu.
