Gwinnett Tech Students Make Their Mark on the AT&T Classic
GTC Sport and Recreation Management Students Learn from the Pros; Help Design AT&T Fan Zone
While all eyes will be on the pros next week when the PGA Tour comes to Duluth for the AT&T Classic at TPC Sugarloaf, Gwinnett Technical College student Ryan Figlestahler will be focused on the most profitable part of the tournament as manager of the corporate display area.
Ryan, a sport management student at Gwinnett Tech, is in the midst of an internship with the Classic, assisting with the marketing and client services side of the event. Ryan began working with Andrew Webber, manager of Marketing & Client Services, in February and will continue until mid-June.
"We work frequently with the Sport and Recreation Management program at Gwinnett Tech, and were happy to welcome Ryan to our team. For students in this program, nothing equals the hands-on learning to be acquired in an internship," says Webber. "Our corporate display area consists of about 20 companies exhibiting their products and services. Ryan is the main contact for these sponsors at the Classic."
Ryan isn't the only Gwinnett Tech student who's making in impact at the tournament. Almost 100 students from GTC'S Marketing Management and Sport and Recreation Management programs met several times with Webber months ago to provide their ideas and input on the redesign of the AT&T Fan Zone at Turner Field. Then, GTC students staffed the Fan Zone for the 19 games prior to the tournament.
"Without the help and leadership of the GTC students we would never be able to activate our promotions in the AT&T Fan Zone at Turner Field. The GTC students have been instrumental in the success of our program," adds Webber.
Perry Hidalgo, Sport and Recreation Management program director for Gwinnett Tech, welcomes the opportunity to introduce his students to the real world of professional sports management. "The AT&T Classic has been a great supporter of our program, and a great partner for education. They help us provide incredible opportunity and access for our students," says Hidalgo.
Gwinnett Tech offers an associate in applied science degree and a diploma in Sport and Recreation Management, as well as certificates in recreation management, tennis club management, and sport management. The college also offers degree and diploma programs in Marketing Management, as well as certificates for Marketing Specialist and Small Business Marketing Manager.
