Gwinnett Tech Associate Degree Nursing Program Earns Accreditation
National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission schedules next site evaluation for 2016
The Board of Commissioners of the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. has granted Gwinnett Technical College's associate degree nursing program initial accreditation and scheduled the next site visit evaluation for spring 2016.
"This is a vital and incredibly satisfying milestone in the development and maturation of Gwinnett Tech's associate degree nursing program," explains Janice McClure, M.A., Ed.D., dean of Nursing Sciences. "This was our goal in July 2008 when we received approval to offer an associate degree nursing program, and it would not have been possible without the tremendous commitment of our administration, faculty and students."
Deliberations for this approval were based on the Self Study Report written by the faculty of the nursing program, and the Site Visitor's Evaluation Report which illuminated the many accomplishments of the program.
In July 2008, Gwinnett Tech received developmental approval from the Georgia Board of Nursing to offer an associate degree nursing program, with initial approval granted in March 2009. The program earned candidacy status in August 2010 and in March 2011 the college hosted a site review visit by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
The college's first class of registered nursing students started classes in September 2009 and in June 2011, were honored in a pinning ceremony and received their degrees at commencement. GTC has Gwinnett County's only RN program.
While specific academic programs at the college often earn specialized industry accreditation, Gwinnett Tech is also accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Healthcare providers such as Eastside Medical Center, Gwinnett Medical Center and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta play a key role in the nursing program by serving as clinical sites for Gwinnett Tech nursing students. Many of these providers will ultimately employ GTC RNs, who will join Gwinnett Tech graduates working in a wide variety of healthcare careers, including surgical technology, radiologic technology, respiratory care, EMT/paramedicine and other fields.
With the opening of Gwinnett Tech's new Life Sciences Center this fall, GTC will be able to double the size of its nursing class to 60. In addition to the nursing program, the college offers more than a dozen other degree, diploma and certificate options in healthcare, life science and bioscience careers. Currently, more than 40 percent of GTC students are enrolled in a health science program.
Overall, Gwinnett Tech offers more than 45 degree, diploma and certificate options that can be completed in two years or less. For more information, visit www.GwinnettTech.edu or call 770-962-7580.
