Reserve Success as a Hotel Manager

There's no such thing as a minor detail when you're a hotel manager, as you will learn through Gwinnett Tech's hotel management specialist program.

Everything from ensuring that reservations are accurate and rooms are clean, to making sure employees are helpful and fresh-cut flowers are in the lobby, help make the clients happy and the hotel a success.

Hotel managers have the responsibilities of keeping their properties profitable and running smoothly. In a small hotel with a small staff, hotel managers may oversee all operations of the hotel. For large properties, the hotel manager may employ a rather large staff with any number of assistant managers to whom he or she delegates many of the duties that keep the hotel running. Hotel managers also have to be able to get along with various personalities because they are dealing with all types of individuals, both internally with staff and externally with guests. They also have the responsibility to uphold the guidelines of the property, as set by either the owners of the hotel or the executives of the hotel chain.

Training in hotel management includes courses in hospitality, employee training, convention and meeting planning, hotel operations management, accounting, economics, marketing, housekeeping, food service management and catering, and hotel maintenance engineering. Training in computers is also essential in hotel management because computers are so prevalent in the areas of reservations, billing and housekeeping management.

The majority of hotel managers are employed working in hotels or motels, but there are also opportunities for hotel managers with other types of lodging establishments, like inns, boardinghouses, camps, dude ranches or recreational resorts.

Some hotel managers may live onsite, which may defray the cost of living, and a majority -- whether living onsite or off -- log more than 40 hours a week.
