Gwinnett Tech Recognizes Top Students at Annual Awards Ceremony
Surgical Tech Student Kateri Pletcher Named 2008 Distinguished Student

Gwinnett Technical College honored more than 200 students for academic excellence and achievement at the college's annual Awards Ceremony held at The Busbee Center on Gwinnett Tech's campus last week.

The Gwinnett Tech Foundation awarded 51 scholarships totaling $47,450 at the ceremony, recognizing students for various achievements in academic, vocational and occupational skills, as well as overall leadership and teamwork.

"The Awards Ceremony is an annual highlight for us – a deserving celebration of the achievements of so many students who go above and beyond each year," says Sharon Bartels, president, Gwinnett Technical College.

The culmination of the Awards Ceremony program was the naming of Gwinnett Tech's 2008 Distinguished Student.

Honored for her educational goals, community involvement and leadership, Kateri Pletcher was recognized as the 2008 Distinguished Student Award recipient.

Enrolled in the Surgical Technology program at Gwinnett Tech, Pletcher was selected after a thorough screening and interviewing process. In addition to achieving academic success, Pletcher is also an involved school and community volunteer, as well as a mother of three. Pletcher was selected from the top five outstanding students by a panel of judges.

T.C. Parker, Surgical Technology program director, nominated Pletcher for the honor, noting her enthusiasm, work ethic and perseverance. Pletcher's willingness to help others and her skill on the job was also recognized by the hospital staff where she is completing her clinical studies. "Kateri is a person of unquestionable integrity and is a wonderful example of the type of student we attract at GTC," says Parker.
