Gwinnett Tech Honored for GED Program
Gwinnett Technical College has been honored for its significant role in improving lives and job potential for adult learners seeking their GED® diploma. GTC was recognized last month during the state's annual GED® awards luncheon, hosted by the Technical College System of Georgia's Office of Adult Education.
In both 2007 and 2008, Gwinnett Tech had the largest number of GED® test takers among like-sized GED® Test Centers in Georgia. In 2007, 979 Gwinnett Tech test takers passed the GED® and the college recorded a pass rate of 74.6 percent. In 2008, 1,062 Gwinnett Tech GED® students passed the test, a pass rate of 77.3 percent. The average state pass rate is about 63 percent.
"We applaud the hard work and perseverance of these adult learners who've made the courageous choice to continue their education and improve their lives and the lives of their families," says Alberto Leyva, director of adult education, Gwinnett Tech.
These students at Gwinnett Tech were among almost 20,000 Georgians who earned a GED® diploma last year.
More than 1.1 million Georgians over the age of 25 are without their high school or GED®® diploma. Many face considerable odds against achieving personal success, including a greater chance of being incarcerated. Their likelihood of suffering from low self-esteem is higher, and most will earn an average of $9,000 less a year than a high school graduate.
Last year, the Technical College System of Georgia's Office of Adult Education enrolled more than 95,000 students in adult education programs. The 19,696 adult education students who earned their GED® diploma last year increased their combined earning potential by almost $144 million dollars.
