Gwinnett Tech is Only Southeastern Site to Host Bioscience Educators' Training
Session will bring leading researchers to teach bioinformatics and genomics

Gwinnett Technical College, in collaboration with the Dolan DNA Learning Center (DNALC), Bio-Link and 12 community colleges across the country, will host a week-long workshop on genomics in bioscience for college and higher-level high school teachers - equipping these educators with the latest knowledge and techniques in the field.

Genomic Approaches in BioSciences will be offered June 20-24 on the Gwinnett Tech campus in Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett Tech has been selected as the only site in the Southeast for these workshops, designed for undergraduate biology faculty, technical college faculty and advanced high school biology teachers. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the world's leader in bioinformatics, is collaborating with Gwinnett Tech to offer these educational workshops.

The Genomic Approaches in BioSciences workshops will focus on four key technologies - PCR, DNA Sequencing, RNA interference and Bioinformatics - that will prepare faculty in laboratory technique and career exploration for their students.

"The bioscience program at Gwinnett Tech is a source of leading-edge science that can be applied in the classroom for educational purposes," says Dr. Philip Gibson, director of GTC's bioscience program. "The workshop will be led by researchers from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and will host professors from colleges and universities throughout the Southeastern U.S."

Participants are expected to use the information gained from the workshops in their own classrooms over the next 12 months.

Gwinnett Tech currently offers degree, diploma or certificate options in registered nursing, bioscience, radiologic technology, respiratory care, surgical technology, dental assisting, medical assisting, dental lab technology, veterinary technology and EMT/paramedic technology, many of which are now being expanded. The new Life Sciences Center, opening this fall, will enable the college to introduce new programs in cardiovascular technology, diagnostic sonography, and health information technology, as well as a patient care technician program and bridge programs for practical nursing to registered nursing and for paramedic to registered nursing.

GTC offers more than 45 degree, diploma and certificate options that can be completed in two years or less. For more information, visit or call 770-962-7580.
