GDOT Testing

Gwinnett Technical College is an approved Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) testing site, offering the written examinations for:

  • Quality Control Technician (QCT)
  • Roadway Testing Technician (RTT)
  • Soil Testing Technician (STT)
  • QCT Aggregate (Standard, Source, and Natural Sand) *

*Note: All Aggregate exams require approval at least one week before the testing date.

  1. Exams are administered every first and third Tuesday, or second Friday of the month. Contact our office by emailing Economic@gwinnetttech.edu or call 678-226-4552 to schedule an appointment to take the GDOT written exam. Please indicate the following in your email:
    • Your legal first and last name
    • The name of the test needed
    • The date you would like to take the exam
    • Whether this is the 1st time taking the exam, or a retest
    • The name and contact information of your Supervisor and Billing Contact.
  2. A confirmation email will be sent to confirm the appointment & provide additional instructions.
  3. You must bring a valid government-issued Photo ID with you the day of the test.
  4. The test will be scored, and results will be provided immediately following test completion.
  5. The exam cost is $150.00, and payment must be received before taking the test

        (The payment instructions will be included in the confirmation email).

  • Study guides for each examination can be found at: https://www.dot.ga.gov/GDOT/pages/TechnicianCertification.aspx
    • The study guides will be found in the “Certifications” section towards the bottom of the webpage. 
    • Select the name of the certification test you are planning to take.
    •  Then, select the name “Training Guide” to open.
  • To pass the written exam, you must achieve a minimum score of 75% on each section of the test. If you fail the written exam, you must wait 30 days after your first failed attempt to retake the exam, 90 days after your second failed attempt, and 1 year after your third failed attempt.
  • After passing the written exam at Gwinnett Tech, testers have 90 days to complete the field (“performance”) exam, or the written exam will have to be retaken.
  • Field (“performance”) exams are administered by GDOT’s Office of Materials and Testing at the Central Laboratory in Forest Park or a district Branch Laboratory. Testers should contact GDOT to register. For more information about the field exam, call (404) 631-1990 or email trainingcenter@dot.ga.gov.
