The Electrical Systems Technology Degree program provides instruction in the inspection, maintenance, installation, and repair of electrical systems in the residential, commercial, and industrial industries. A combination of theory and practical application is emphasized to develop academic, technical, and professional knowledge and skills. Program graduates receive a Degree in Electrical Systems Technology with a specialization in residential or industrial applications.
What does an Electrician do?
- Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings
- Read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Safely work with direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) electrical systems
- Wire electrical panels, branch circuits, lighting systems, and receptacles
- Install and troubleshoot motors, motor controls, and variable frequency drives (VFDs)
- Apply National Electrical Code (NEC) and local building code requirements
- Diagnose and repair electrical faults using test equipment and troubleshooting methods
- Install and maintain industrial control systems, including PLCs
- Perform preventive maintenance on electrical equipment and systems
- Follow OSHA safety standards and proper electrical safety procedures
