GWINNETT — Margaret Long, biology instructor at Gwinnett Technical College was recently named the Gwinnett Technical College Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year. The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction began in 1991 and is designed to recognize and honor technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields.
“I am truly honored and humbled to represent Gwinnett Technical College, and to be an ambassador for the Technical College System of Georgia. Every day, I see the impact of technical education on the lives of my students, how it transforms our communities, and strengthens business and industry in the State of Georgia. I am excited to continue on this journey as a representative for the hardworking students and dedicated faculty and staff that inspire me every day to be a better educator,” states Long.
Long found her inspiration to teach from an early age, beginning with a 5 th grade science teacher that pushed her to do better during a time when she was really struggling academically. “She literally left me no choice,” says Long. “Without those people in my life, I would not be the person I have become today.” Long uses her personal experiences to influence her teaching style. “Teaching at Gwinnett Technical College gives me purpose and allows me to find meaning in my work,” says Long. “I am truly fortunate to have found a career I am passionate about that combines my love of science with my drive to help others. Semester after semester, I am amazed by the challenges that my students overcome both in and out of the classroom.”
Gwinnett Technical College is different in that it provides an affordable education that is accessible to all students across the county. In regard to teaching at Gwinnett Tech, Long states, “There is a unique challenge in teaching the diverse range of students we have from all over the area, but it is so gratifying to see students excel.”
Long holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Sciencelogical Science College Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year. in Biological Science from Georgia State University. She is currently earning her Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina.
