This program provides interactive, hands-on experience and led by Certified Medical Assistants (CMA). Our Medical Assisting diploma prepares students for employment in physician offices, clinics, surgical centers and urgent care centers.

Physicians count on medical assistants to:

  • Greet and process incoming and outgoing patients
  • Prepare and assist the physician during an exam
  • Perform routine clinical tasks such as collecting and preparing laboratory specimens
  • Take patient histories and chief complaint
  • Preparing and administering medications as directed by a physician
  • Measure vital signs & height and weight
  • Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping
  • Coding and filling out insurance forms
  • Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services

Admission to this program is competitive and is only offered full-time, during the day at our Lawrenceville campus.

The Gwinnett Technical College diploma level is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). Graduates of the Gwinnett Tech Medical Assisting program are eligible to sit for national certification for medical assisting. The Medical Assisting program Job Placement for the 2023 graduates was 100%.

What can I expect from the Medical Assisting Program?

This program prepares students for employment in a variety of positions in today’s healthcare industry. The program provides learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. Additionally, the program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills or to retrain in the area of medical assisting.

The goal of our program is to prepare future medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behaviors) domain. Coursework includes: structure, function and diseases of the human body, medical terminology, medical law and ethics, pharmacology, medical assisting procedures (both administrative and clinical) and a practicum (externship) in medical assisting.
